The local musician of Burdur, Ahmet Ali Selçuk's (1944-2011) life, his works and his musical style

Teke region; It is a peninsula extending towards the Mediterranean between the Gulf of Antalya and the Gulf of Fethiye in the south-west of Turkey. This geography, which has been used as a residential area since very early times, has an important cultural heritage. Burdur province, which is accepted as the cultural capital of the Teke region, emerges as a province that carries and transfers this heritage to a significant extent. The importance of the local artists of the region in keeping the culture alive and transferring is an undeniable fact. With this study, it is aimed to examine the data about the life, works and musical style of Ahmet Ali Selçuk, a local artist from Burdur, who has made important contributions to the music of the Teke region. This study is a qualitative research and was designed with a case study model. Data were collected through resource (document) scanning, examination of audio-visual recordings and semi-structured interviews. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and content analysis. Ahmet Ali Selçuk, who lived between 1944-2011 and apprenticed with Mustafa Kara (Hüyüklü Arap), one of the important masters of the region, at the age of 13-14. and throughout his professional life; It was determined that he played drum, zurna, baglama, cura and sipsi instruments. Within the Turkish Folk Music repertoire belonging to the Burdur region, 13 works of Ahmet Ali Selçuk, in which he contributed to this culture, were reached. Among these works, 3 works whose music is anonymous and written by him, 5 works that he heard from his masters and local teams and compiled and transferred to the present, and 5 works that he sourced were identified. It has been seen that 12 of the works are in the form of unmetered folk songs (expatriate songs), and 1 of them is in the form of broken folk song (9/8 teke zeybek). It has been determined that 10 of the works are in Gülizar, 1 in Hüseyni, 1 in Karcığar and 1 in Çargah makam. The notes of 11 unmetered folk songs and 1 broken folk song from the works reached were created in this study. It has been concluded that Ahmet Ali Selçuk has unique techniques and manners that he applies in the performance of the baglama, vocals and voices, especially in the performance of the expatriate air that are unique to the region, and this style of playing is known in the region as 'Ahmet Ali Selçuk Attitude'.
