The female body in context of ugliness in contemporary art

Ugliness emerges as a concept related to both feminine and masculine creatures. In general, ugliness appears as a concept that each culture determines according to its own understanding of value, and it is seen that it is directed more towards women in philosophical, medical, sociological and literary literatures. The adoption of women as an inferior creature in previous periods was seen as disrespectful and unacceptable in the 20th century. However, paradoxically, although the woman is no longer valued for her beauty, her physique has gained value. Many factors such as the invention of photography, the birth of cinema and the development of mass media make the female body a symbolic element. Accordingly, in addition to the fact that ugliness is a feature that exists in people of biological origin by nature, traumatic situations occur in people who are not biologically similar to others, because they do not conform to the beauty status determined by the society, and that person is excluded. The culture of advertising in the media has an attitude towards the marginalization and stigmatization of people. In this context; Why are things belonging to nature such as animals, stones and plants not labeled? Or, within which cache memory is such an exclusion made for humans? When we look at the processing of the ugly female body in contemporary art, it is seen that the artists produce critically about the commodification of the female body. In this context, it is seen that the artists' works include elements that deform the female body by taking the woman's body out of the necessity of "being ideal". The aim of this study; The aim of this study is to examine the ways in which contemporary art criticizes the female body artistically by distorting and disfiguring the female body against the norms dictated by the society such as perfection, perfection and ideal beauty, and to examine the works of artists in this context. The method framework of the research is to examine the studies in contemporary art, to review the literature, to deconstruct the ideal beauty perception created through the female body and to present it from the perspective of the artist. The thesis study named "The Female Body in the Context of Ugliness in Contemporary Art" has been analyzed under three main headings. Within the scope of the study, first of all, the concept of "ugly" was examined, and under this section; "The body in the context of ugliness", "the reflections of the concept of the ugly body before contemporary art on art", "the ugly body in the context of the other" and the sub-titles of this section "the handling of the ugly body as a freak in art" and "the transformation of the female body into an object of desire" are included. . In the second part of the study; Under the main title of "the forms of expression of ugliness in contemporary art through the female body"; "associating the female body with ugliness", "the handling of ugliness through the female body in contemporary art", "the ways in which the female body, which has become an object of desire, is examined in contemporary art" will be examined; In the third and last part of the study; "Expression of ugliness in practice studies" will be included.
