Representation of masculinity in contemporary art

The issue of masculinity, which constitutes an important area to be analyzed within gender studies, constitutes the conceptual infrastructure of this study. When we look at the historical process of gender studies, we can generally find research conducted around women's issues at the center. Where these studies are not sufficient, the perspective has turned towards the issue of masculinity. The issue of masculinity, which has a very important place for gender studies, is examined as the main subject of this research. Approaching the process historically and culturally, the study follows in the footsteps of researchers and presents definitions of the concept of masculinity through a literature review. At the same time, it conveys general views on the issue of masculinity in national and international dimensions. The subject of the research, whose conceptual framework is drawn, also emerges as an issue in contemporary art. This affinity established through the structure of the textile material and the definitions brought to the issue of masculinity is positioned in an important place for the artistic research process of the thesis. For this reason, the issue of masculinity has been approached through examples of artists who continue their production with textiles. The study, which includes information on the changing fields of thought of artists who continue to produce with textile materials in the historical process, also traces the information about the transforming identity of the material. The individuals produced within the scope of the research offer a different perspective for rethinking the areas where the issue of masculinity is questioned in the works.
