Yarn in contemporary art

This study includes, the works of modern artists who attribute special meanings by using only yarn and question the language of the visual effects of the yarn, by emphasizing its importance as the most basic production material in the textile. Since the beginning of 20th Century, art has become a boundless field as a result of the combination of different disciplines and new ways of expressions. In this sense, the contemporary artists, who interpret themselves with yarn, also established their own language of expression by combining the visual effect of the yarn into architecture, painting, sculpture, space and installation. This study consists of four parts and the first part is composed of the examination of the yarn in the historical process, its definition and classification. In the second part, the fundemantal changes in the art and the moden art are condsidered. With the freedom as a result of modern understandings, the artists who are in search for new materials caused an alteration to autenthicity with their new intellectual and visual probes in the art. With respect to these new conseptions and pursuit, new approaches to the art of classical textile are being expressed. Moreover, the Bauhaus-school and the artiststs that played a great role as a breaking point in the prencence of art of textile within the plastic arts are also mentioned. The third part includes the activities and the developments that occured through the transition period from the conventional weaving art to fiber art. The last part is about the comtemporary art and today's art. In addition, the artists who question entirely the expressions of the visual effects of the yarn and their Works, which is also the major subject of this study, are being examined. As conclusion, within the atmosphere of 21th century art, despite all breakups, the yarn is not only a production material apart from its usage in classical textile art but also is determined as a creative production material to form an art being both individually self-subject and self-object among all the disciplines of arts.
