The views of teachers on modern Turkish and world history subject: The case of Trabzon

This study is conducted in order to present the ideas and thoughts of the History teachers from the secondary schools in Trabzon, to show their perception on Contemporary Turkish and World History subject, to show what kind of problems they have during this lesson and their solutions to improve this subject.The research is conducted via descriptive survey method with fifty teachers who teach in secondary schools in Trabzon during 2011-2012 academic year. In accordance with the purpose of the research, a questionnaire that consists twenty questions two of which are open-ended is developed and fifty teachers are taken this questionnaire. A semi-structured interview form including eleven questions is developed and twenty History teachers attended the interview.According to the research data history teachers that it is necessary to have a Modern Turkish and World History lesson for all students and to be taught for all areas of high schools. They also believe that, this lesson should be given from 10th class, teaching hours should be increased, more importance should be given to the topics of Turkish world and the textbook should be simplified. In the light of research finding, reducing the amount of topics, spreading the course to different years, using different methods and techniques in the classroom , revision and rewritten of the textbook is recommended.Key Words: Teaching History, Contemporary History Teaching, History Teaching in Turkey, Contemporary Turkish and World History.
