Abstract (EN)
This thesis has been prepared with the objective to examine the history of Turkish composers, the musical trends they have been influenced by, and - the young generation composers? flute works being in focus - with the aim to determine their standpoint between traditionalism and modernism, and in terms of the Turkish motives/modes or the modern techniques that the cited composers have used in their works. In Chapter One, the developmental process of the Western Music in Turkey and the first group of professional composers, called ?Turkish Five,? have been examined and the Turkish composers from the beginning of the Republic of Turkey to present have been surveyed for the purpose of defining the amount of traditional and modern methods they utilized in their individual compositional processes. In Chapter Two, the biographies of the composers writing for flute and the character of their musical expression are inspected. In Chapter Three, interviews with the living composers are included and their flute works are analytically explored in terms of the antinomy of the traditional and modern approaches they possess including the formal and musical properties of the works in question.
