Abstract (EN)
White stork (Ciconia ciconia) is known as a symbolic bird species, and is considered a symbol of luck, fertility and abundance in many cultures. For this reason, the life history and behavior of White stork arouse interest in environment. The species is large bird recognized by long legs andneck, white feather and black wing tip. White stork usually lives in farmlands, wetlands and open meadows. The aim of the current study was to examine the reproductive success of White stork population in the Çanakkale Ida Mountains region. Initially, the research started in March 2021 with the return of individuals to the nest. The first breeding activity in the area was detected on March 17, 2021. A total of 15 stork nests were identified and breeding activity was detected in 12 nests for the study year and these nests were observed 22 times periodically. In the nests with incubation activity, clutch size is 49 eggs, and a total of 38 chicks hatched. It was determined that 22 individuals successfully fledged. The total hatching rate was 78%. According to the total number of eggs, fledgling success were 45% in this study. Reproduction was successful in 9 out of 12 nests. The quality and continuity of food provided by adults affect the success of raising young. However, nest height or location did not affect breeding success. The results of the studied population does not appear to be limited by food availability, adult, chick mortality or nest site availability. Therefore, factors related to mortality during migration or overwintering nesting in Turkey can play a more important role.
