Investigation of expression mistakes in Çanakkale regional newspapers

This study investigates the usage of Turkish Language in Çanakkale regional newspapers and find out the errors in language and expression mistakes. The aim of the study is to pay attention on these detected mistakes and increase awareness about the importance of plain and true language usage in regional newspapers. Nine daily newspapers: Gazete Boğaz, Boğaz Vitamin, Burası Çanakkale, Kalem, Gündem, Çanakkale Yaşam, Çanakkale Haber, Olay, Kalenin Sesi ; two weekly newspapers: Aynalı Pazar ve Kamuoyu were scanned for this study. The sample of the study consisted 250 newspapers which were published in December, 2009.After searching through different sources and then collecting the data, a list that contains the basic expression mistakes about the meaning and the structure has been prepared. Data was organized in a way that could be compared easily in terms of the frequency of expression mistakes have been stated in percentage. In tables, the frequency rates in terms of expression mistakes that were found across different newspapers were stated. The results showed that the most frequently seen expression mistake was ?ek eksikliği? with the total number of 157 mistakes. The second frequent expression mistake was ?ek fazlalılığı? with the total number of 129 mistakes. The third frequent expression mistake was ?dolaylı tümleç eksikliği? with the total number of 97. The number of expression mistakes was the highest in the regional newspaper which was called Kalem with the total number of 159.At the end of the study, the conclusions and suggestions about the minimizing the expression mistakes were stated.
