Abstract (EN)

The conservation area began to develop and organize in the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in parallel with the West. This is also a transition period in which traditional architecture and building production started to be used extensively by using new construction techniques and materials from the West, and these materials and techniques are widely used in repairs. The understanding of heritage conservation in the XXIth century requires more accurate recognition of material types, usage styles and implementation techniques related to this transitional period, analyzing them more carefully and transferring them to future generations in the most preserved way. The textbooks on architecture and construction, which were written in the transition period, provide important data both in terms of being written sources that convey information about traditional construction materials and techniques, and in terms of materials and techniques that have begun to be imported from the West. However, in the XXIth century, some of the initiatives to combat climate change in the field of conservation have turned to increase the awareness of traditional construction techniques by making use of written and oral sources. It is estimated that Celal Esad Arseven's book, Building Materials, which is an Ottoman copyright work, will fill an important knowledge gap in the field of conservation. For this reason, within the scope of this thesis, the book was firstly Latinized. Then, the original aspects of the book were tried to be determined by comparing the information about the material and construction technique in other books written in its close period. At the same time, it is aimed to introduce traditional materials and construction techniques, which are little known or not known in practice, to the conservation literature in terms of definition and terminology.
