Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of decompression on the histopathological characteristics of cystic jaw lesions that were treated with decompression followed by enucleation, by means of comparing the initial and the final biopsy findings obtained before and after decompression treatment. Method: Biopsy samples from cyctic jaw lesions before decompression were retrospectively compared with those obtained after decompression at the time of final surgery. The effects of decompression on lesions' characters were evaluated by comparing histopathological findings. Results: The initial biopsy findings were compatible with the final biopsy findings following decompression and enucleation for 94% (16 of 17) of radicular cysts, 100% of dentigerous cysts, 83% (5 of 6) of odontogenic keratocysts and 100% of residual cysts. The initial biopsy findings were confirmed with excisional biopsy findings for 37 of the 39 lesions included in the study. One lesion, intially reported as a radicular cyst prior to decompression was reported as granulation tissue with no epithelial finding after the final treatment at a 17-year-old male patient. One lesion that was previously reported as an odontogenic keratocyst prior to decompression was later confirmed as granulation tissue at a 12-year-old male patient. Conclusion: Histopathological findings of biopsy samples obtained before and after decompression are substantially consistent. Therefore, treatment methods may be tailored according to the initial biopsy findings for cystic jaw lesions. However, these findings need to be supported with studies of larger sample sizes and statistical analyzes. Key words: jaw, cyst, decompression, enucleation, histopathology, diagnosis
