The effect of collaboration among nurses working in surgical units on clinical decision making levels

Aim: The research was carried out to determine the clinical decision-making levels of the cooperation of nurses working in surgical clinics. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study consisted of 238 nurses working in the Surgical Units of Istanbul Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital. Sample selection technique was not used in the study, all nurses who worked and participated in the study at the time of the study were included in the study (n=210). The research data were collected with the "Nurse Information Form" prepared by the researcher, which included the personal information of the nurses participating in the research, the Nurse-Nurse Collaboration Scale (HHIÖ) and the Clinical Decision Making Scale in Nursing (HKKVÖ). Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: The mean age of the nurses participating in the study was 25.82±2.41 and 65.7% were women. It was found that 41.9% of the nurses worked in the emergency department, 75.2% worked more than 40 hours a week, and 73.3% worked in shifts. It was determined that 83.3% of the nurses were in cooperation with their nurse colleagues in the unit they worked in. The mean score of the nurses' HIAI was 3.07±0.36, and the mean score of the HCAI was 138.30±14.34. Conclusion: In line with the results obtained from the research, it was concluded that the cooperation of nurses affects the decision-making process at a moderate level. It was determined that the decision-making levels of the nurses working in the intensive care unit were higher. In this direction, it has been suggested to organize programs to develop nurses' clinical decision-making skills and to develop nurse-nurse cooperation.
