Determining the knowledge and attitudes of surgical nurses to prevent pressure ulcers

This study was conducted in between October 2022 and December 2022 in order to determine the knowledge and attitudes of surgical nurses to prevent pressure injuries. It was carried out at Maltepe University Medical Faculty Hospital. The study was limited to 120 nurses working in the operating room, surgical services and surgical intensive care unit. Research data were collected face-to-face with the "Nurses Descriptive Information Form", "Attitude Scale to Prevent Pressure Ulcers (BUOYTO)" and "Modified Pieper Pressure Wound Information Test (MPBYBT)". Within the scope of the study, IMB SPSS 22.0 package program was used in the synthesis of the survey data sets. According to the results of Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality analysis, no normal distribution was observed. In the meantime, hypotheses were tested using non-parametric test methods such as Kruskall-Wallis and Mann Whitney U by making double and triple comparisons. Of the nurses, 81.7% were female, mean age was 26.83±4.50 years, 40.8% had a bachelor's degree, 75.8% worked in surgical services, 88.3% worked as staff nurses. It was seen that 40.3% of them worked in the profession and 50% of them worked in the unit between 1-5 years. It was determined that they got 28.26±4.66 points from theMPBYBT and 34.60±3.88 points from the BUOYTO. It was observed that there was a statistically significant, negative and low level correlation between the scores of the MPBYBT and BUOYTO scores (p<0.05). It was determined that the scores of the nurses on the MPBYBT and the BUOYTO were below the average, and as the MPBYBT score increased, the BUOYTO score decreased. It is recommended to support surgical nurses by raising awareness with regular trainings to prevent pressure injuries.
