Analysis of translation studies terms

Translation is a vital phenomenon. It is a tool that contributes to the development of nations. The aim of this work is to show that some Turkish translation studies terms are not clear. Translation studies contains a large number of terms. These terms are mostly translated from the source language into Turkish. Although some of these terms seem to be Turkish, they do not have certain meanings in minds and do not give clear messages. Some of them have been transferred to our language and used by borrowing technique. But it is also obvious that many of these terms do not give clear messages to the reader. Since these terms form the main point of sentences and the messages, it becomes impossible to understand the sentence completely without determining the exact meaning of these words. Within the scope of this thesis, the subject of what translation is and how it should be is briefly discussed in the first chapter. Some important views of some translation studies experts have been given. The second section provides some information about the historical development of translation studies in the world, in the Turkish world, in the Ottoman Empire and in the Republic of Turkey. In the third section, the subject is terms. In the fourth chapter, 45 of the translation studies terms that are the main subject of the thesis are discusses. The 45 terms are chosen from among the terms that are argued to be the most difficult to understand. We tried to explain why they are not understood and we offered alternative terms for the the majority of these terms have After the discussion of the translation studies terms, explanations supporting this thesis were made. It has also been suggested that a translation comission should be at the local level and they should decide about the terms of translation. In this way, easy-to-understand terms can be produced. The clearness of translation studies terms' meanings is a serious issue. This work aims to point out some certain problems in the translation studies terms. And also it aims to prove that some translation studies terms are not clear and the experts on this science must solve this important problem. For this reason, we aim to draw attention to the unclear current terms of translation studies and tried to present it as a problem and showed solutions.
