From environmental effects to individual choices: The relationship of hijab with fashion and social dynamics - Erzurum case

This study aims to examine how hijab is shaped as an individual choice and to explore the social, cultural, and environmental dynamics influencing this preference. In this context, hijab is considered not only as a religious obligation but also as a phenomenon shaped through the interaction of family structure, social environment, and cultural context. The study focuses on the process of adopting hijab, the influence of family and social circles, its relationship with fashion and consumer culture, changing perceptions of hijab, and understandings of ideal hijab. The research was conducted using a qualitative method, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The study group consisted of 21 female participants living in Erzurum. The findings reveal that the decision to adopt hijab is not based on a single factor but develops through a dynamic process shaped by family, social environment, religious motivations, role models, and personal experiences. While many participants regard hijab as a religious responsibility, fashion trends, consumer culture, social media, and modern living conditions also influence their clothing preferences. The findings further indicate differences between ideal understandings of hijab and daily practices, as participants seek to balance traditional and modern interpretations. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the individual and social dimensions of hijab are closely intertwined and contributes to the literature on the subject.
