Development of learning analytics dashboard that supports self-regulated learning in online learning environments

In this study a learning environment and integrated learning analytics dashboard that will support students' self-regulation in online learning was designed and developed. Students who take control and responsibility of their learning by using self-regulated learning strategies are successful in their formal education and later in lifelong learning. In this study, design-based research methodology were followed. A needs analysis was carried out through systematic literature review and focus group interviews with students. In accordance with the analysis findings system and learning analytics dashboard were designed. The development process started with the approval of the design by the experts from Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies. The system was build on top of Moodle learning management system, and learning analytics dashboard was developed using avaliable application programming interfaces. Sakarya University Education Faculty students used the system for 5 weeks in Assesment and Evaluation in Education course. Later the system was used in Internet based Education course for whole semester. In both aplications, students' self-regulated learning levels in online environments were measured with Online Self-regulated Learning Questionnaire. While there was no significant difference between the self-regulated learning levels of the students after the first five-week application, the t-test result for repeated measurements in the second application showed that the students' self-regulated learning increased significantly at the end of the application.
