Reproduction of masculine domination through symbolic violence against children: The case of the Innocent Apartment

Television, which is an effective socialization tool, can reach many people with its addictive program types. Television, which has the capacity to produce culture and the power to build the social order, is an important tool of violence that allows the practice of symbolic violence. Symbolic violence, as a form of intelligible, soft and invisible violence, requires the complicity of the dominated to protect and maintain the interests of the dominant. This research is about symbolic violence against children in the context of masculine domination buried deep in family ties and reproduction of this domination in the series Masumlar Apartmanı broadcast on TRT. The main purpose of this research, which is based on the interpretative qualitative content analysis method, is to discover, understand and make visible the symbolic violence of the masculine domination, which is hidden behind all the sacred about the social, against the child, with the reflexive sociological point of view of Bourdieu, in the series of Masumlar Apartmanı. The way and context of the child characters in the patriarchal family contributes to the formation of the perception schemes of the audience and therefore the society towards the child. The research is of great importance in order to understand how masculine domination, inequalities, hierarchy and binary differentiation in society are reproduced, internalized, sustained and legitimized through symbolic violence against children in the TV series. It is very important to raise awareness in terms of breaking the cycle. Readings on Bourdieu's sociology, literature readings focused on seeing symbolic violence, and the series of Masumlar Apartmanı selected as a research sample were examined. Based on the coding framework obtained from the data, seven categories were created. Masculine domination and symbolic violence were determined as the main theme. The findings show that masculine domination is reproduced through symbolic violence against children.
