In vitro investigation of the effect of children's toothpastes on the surface roughness of polyacid modified composite resins

The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the effects of various children's toothpastes on the surface roughness of polyacid modified composites resin. In the study, 50 square specimens of 10x10 mm dimensions and 2 mm thickness were created using polyacid modified composite resin (Voco, Caps, A2) and polished using Sof-Lex (3M ESPE Dental Products, St. Paul, MN. USA) polishing discs. Samples kept in distilled water for 24 hours at 37°C were randomly divided into five groups: Group 1 (Control), Group 2 (Rocs Junior), Group 3 (Sensodyne Promine Kids), Group 4 (Jack and Jill), Group 5 (Oral-B Kids). Initial measurements were made with Precision balance, Optical Profilometer and Atomic Force Microscope, and initial surface properties were evaluated with Scanning Electron Microscope. Toothpaste and artificial saliva were mixed at a ratio of 1: 3 by weight and the samples were brushed for two minutes twice a day for 15 days, equivalent to one year of brushing. Samples were stored in artificial saliva solution between brushing sessions. Final evaluations were made with Precision balance, Optical Profilometer, Atomic Force Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope. It was determined that the initial and final findings of precision balance measurements were not significantly different between the groups (p>0.05). It was determined that the final roughness measurements obtained from Sensodyne Promine Kids increased significantly compared to the initial measurements (p=0.002; p<0.05). It was observed that the measurements obtained with AFM were compatible with the optical profilometer. Ra values determined by both optical profilometer and AFM were found to be below 0. 2 μm, which was determined as the critical threshold value for bacterial colonization. According to the results of our study, although there are many factors affecting the abrasiveness rate in the paste formulation, it can be said that toothpastes containing silica as abrasive particles are more reliable for oral hygiene applications in cases we restored with compomer.
