The prevention of violence and aggression on children and adolescents

The purpose of the study is to prepare a prevention of violence and aggression programme on children and adolescents and examine the effectiveness of the programme in decreasing aggressiveness at adolescents. In accordance with the aim of the research, the researcher arranged The Prevention Programme of Violence and Aggression on Children and Adolescents and this programme was administered to 8th class students.In the prevention programme including anger mangement and conflict resolution skills. A pilot study was carried out to evaluate the deficiencies and problems of the programmes. The programme was finalized after that preliminary study. The main study was done in 2009-2010 education year, with 8th grade students of two formal primary schools in Edirne. The pre test-post test experimental model with control group was used. The data was collected by using Aggression Scale, developed by Buss & Perry (1992), then adopted to Turkish by Can (2002). After application and assessment procedures totally 40 students whose aggression scores were highest, were put into 4 groups of 10 students each randomly. The experiment groups attended The Prevention Programme of Violence and Aggression on Children and Adolescents in 12 sessions taken once a week and 75 minutes. No application was done to control groups. At the end of the experiment, post test was applied to all groups at the same time.The data were analyzed by using repeated measures of ANOVA and Tukey test. Findings have shown that The Prevention Programme of Violence and Aggression Programme on Children and Adolescents is effective in total aggression points, physical and verbal aggression points when compared to the control groups (p<.05). No difference has been found in anger, hostility and indirect aggression points (p>.05). The results were interpreted in accordance with the related literature.
