The problems faced by the characters in the children's books at the school environment and their coping strategies in the face of the problems

In this study, the problems experienced by the characters in the children's books in the school environment and the coping strategies they use in the face of the problems were examined. In this paper, the document analysis pattern is employed. The study's data source consists of children's books in the genre of novels and short stories. In order to determine the problems in the books, researches on the problems experienced by children and adolescents at school were analyzed, and classifications were created in this direction. In addition, coping strategies were studied under the headings of active, avoidant and negative coping strategies via using the Problem Solving Inventory for Children and the Coping Scale for Adolescents. According to the results obtained in the study, it was observed that the problems experienced by the characters in the school environment overlapped with the problems in real life. It has been confirmed that coping strategies are also similar to the strategies used by children and adolescents. At the same time, the effects of strategies on the solution of problems are reflected to the readers in the books. It can be argued that the books that deal with coping strategies related to school problems can be used in bibliotherapy and other guidance studies with children.
