Parents' opinions on parental involvement process in their children's education

The aim of this study is to reveal the views of parents regarding family participation in their children's educational processes. The population of the study consists of the parents whose children receive education in 35 primary schools (21 Primary Schools, 14 Middle Schools) in Aliağa district of İzmir in 2018-2019 academic year. The sample was not taken in the study; data was collected from the whole population. The scale called "Parental involvement: Model revision through scale development", developed by Walker et al. (2005), was adapted to Turkish and Turkish culture in order to collect data. The adaptation study of the scale was applied on parents with different demographic characteristics, so that the relationship between these features and dimensions of family participation was tried to be determined. The scale adapted to Turkish was named by the researcher as the "Family Participation Scale", which consists of 25 items all of whose validity and reliability were proved. Data collection was done by using this scale with 2684 parents who voluntarily participated in the study. Some of the data obtained as a result of the research are as follows: • While the sub-dimension where parents participated most was school-based participation, the sub-dimension with the lowest participation was the parent's potential dimension, which determined the participation of parents according to their time and energy status.  When the family participation relationship is analyzed by school level, primary school parents are more involved than the secondary school parents in every sub- dimension of family participation.  When the levels of family participation activities are examined according to the parents' gender, there is no significant difference in the dimension of home based participation and parents' perceptions of teacher expectations; In terms of school- based family participation, parents' potential and parents' beliefs in family participation, women participate more than men.  When the relationship between family participation and the educational status of the parents are examined, the level of family participation increases as the education level of the parents increases.  When parents' views on family participation are analyzed by age variable, it is determined that parents under the age of 35 and over 46 have similar characteristics, whereas parents between the ages of 36-45 have a higher level of participation than those of the other age group.  When parents' views on family participation are analyzed according to the income status variable, as the income level of the parents increases, the level of family participation increases.
