Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Uzmanlık Tezi, Diyarbakır 2013.Due to the high rate of death due to childhood poisoning in developing countries such as Turkey, poisoning in childhood, has quickly become a major health problem to be solved. Causes of poisonings country may change over the years from country to country, from region to region within the same country. Similarly, the toxicity factors vary according to age, gender, level of education, culture, and the seasons. In our study examine the demographic and clinical characteristics of childhood poisonings, detection the effective factors on mortality, research modifications in diagnosis and treatment and thus recommendations for the prevention of poisonings are aimed. The study made by scaning retrospective files of poisoning cases to 0-18 age patients refers to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, Children's Emergency Department between 01.01.2012-01.01.2013 from provinces of Diyarbakır and the surroundings. Food poisoning and animal bites are not included in the study, 73 female (50.7%) and 71 men (49.3%) for a total of 144 patients were analyzed. Poisoning cases were found to be 1.4% of all applications for emergency patients. In the total of 144 patients, 74.3% were between 0-5 age range, 9% were between 6-12 age range 16.7% were between 13-18 age range. All of poisoning cases did not differ in terms of gender (50.6% female, 49.4% male). 118 admitted to the emergency department of pediatric hospital were from inside province, 26 were from outside of the province. It has been found that due to an accident drug and non-drug poisonings increases during the spring and summer months. Poisonings due to drugs (60.4%), were found to be more than poisonings due to non-pharmaceutical substances (39.6%). Peaked in the age group of 0-5, men poisonings (58 people) was higher than the girls (49 persons) 13-18 age group girls (20 persons) were found to be more than men (4 people). Overall, it was determined that 79.9% of the cases of accidental poisoning supply toxin easily from accessible places. In our study, it was found that all of the 0-5 age group poisonings were accidents and therapeutic errors which can be prevented by taking measuresAccordingly, the storage of toxic materials, packaging, identification of potential toxins, in-house training for security measures, updating information on the toxicity of health personnel, strengthening ofemergency units, training for parents and their children, politicians to take structural, administrative and political attitudes in this direction need to be promoted.
