Geographical information system based campus information system: Implementation

In today?s world, developing technology plays an important role in our lives. One of the advantages of developing technology is obtaining, creating, saving, collecting, analyzing, and using data and information formed by data easily in computer environment. Like all areas in our lives, also in academic life, information technologies should be used effectively to benefit. With computer supported studies, executing academic environment will provide using information effectively. An information system which is map-based and containing an academic structure is easy to use. It supports the person and the associations that are at the stage of decision making. Geographic Information System and the programs supporting the system can be taken an advantage while creating a map-based campus information system. In this study, a map-based campus information system is designed, academic and administrative data in university?s structure and social equipments are supported by graphical data are shown by appropriate programs in a computer environment. The system is named as Geographical Information System Based Campus Information System and users who are going to use this system should be identified. In this study, the map-based campus information system users are academic and administrative personnel in university?s structure, present students, the person and the associations that are seeking information about the university. After considering all users and identifying their needs, the system is designed. Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Buca Dokuzçesmeler Campus is chosen for the application of the study. A sample model of campus information system is designed for this area. The programs that are used while designing Campus Information System are AutoCAD, MapInfo, MapBasic, Excel and Access.
