Investigation of the changes in geography teaching methods in the 2020-2021 online education process according to teachers' views

The research aims to examine the changes in geography teaching methods in the 2020-2021 online education period according to the views of the teachers. Subjects such as the usage rates and the level of meeting the gains of the methods used, the interaction and success levels of the students during the geography courses in secondary education institutions were analyzed. When the previous studies on geography teaching methods were examined, it was seen that there were studies on what these methods are or how they are used. However, it was seen that there were no detailed studies on what extent the teaching methods were used in the geography courses, in online education in secondary education institutions, during the 2020-2021 pandemic. The research was carried out in order to contribute to the elimination of this problem and to create a resource in geography teaching. Within the scope of the research, 12 geography teachers working in secondary education institutions affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, in Selçuklu district of Konya were interviewed. The interview, in which the teachers participated voluntarily, was carried out with the semi-structured interview method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, based on the scanning model, and the findings were interpreted using descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques. As a result of the research, it was stated that the number of methods used in geography teaching in online education during the pandemic decreased compared to the methods used in the face-to-face education, according to participant opinions. The participants concluded that this situation led to the fact that the subject gains were not met sufficiently and the course achievement of the students decreased compared to face-to-face education. As a result of these findings, it was recommended to increase the use of less used methods in geography teaching with teacher training. In addition, it is recommended to carry out studies by experts in the field to inform teachers and students and to diversify the learning resources used, in order to prevent the problems experienced in online education from recurring in such possible situations.
