Özet (EN)

V ABSTRACT University Campus Planning is designing a physical environment which contains various functions and elements. University is a place where the young orients for future and also cultural, scientific and sportive activities take place. In the 20th century, the higher education has become the common acculturation. The characterization of the environment is closely related with the success of the campus design. Some examples of university campus site plans are evaluated here with a goal of formatting living campus planning. Main criteria are obtained after the evaluation of the successful samples. In this thesis, Izmir Institute of Technology campus is considered as "a case study" to investigate. This campus planning is compared with the main ideas of campus design. This thesis in the Department of Architecture contains seven chapters. The first chapter is the Introduction chapter which involves the "Definition of the Problem", "Purpose of the Study" and "Methods of the Study' It contains the definition of campus design and the problems which expose the necessity to design each university as a campus. In the second chapter the development of campus design in the world and in Turkey throughout the 20th century are examined. And the examples of campus design site plans from Turkey and the other countries are investigated and their success according to criteria of campus design are determined.VI In the third chapter, human basic needs in a university physical environment are examined. These needs include human and behavioral needs, physiological, sociological and psychological needs, and requirements for education, research, health, recreation, food service and sports. In the fourth chapter, physical structure for a university campus is discussed. The main criterias are determined such as campus landuses, infrastructure, building locations, functional arrangements, circulation networks. In the fifth chapter, the visual (architectural) criteria for campus design such as image, style, aesthetical values, landmarks, materials, landscapes are investigated. Some approaches for campus design are studied in the sixth chapter. These are linear, centralized, non-linear and decentralized, molecular and grouping-zoning organizations. In the seventh chapter, İzmir Institute of Technology campus is investigated as "a case study" comparing with the main criteria of university campus planning and finally two proposals are developed for the site plan of Izmir Institute of Technology. Finally, the elements to pay attention while creating more quantified university environment in design are defined and determined.
