A Comparison of actual and preferred classroom learning environment as perceived by teachers and students at yadim

Prof Zuhal OKANSeptember 2006, 93 PagesThe purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature on classroom learningenvironment with a specific reference to English Language Teaching contexts. It isdesigned to evaluate the classroom learning environment from students? and teachers?perspective. Therefore, the study asks both students and teachers working at YADIM(Centre for Foreign Languages) at Çukurova University to indicate their preferred andactual perception of their classroom learning environments. A form of Colleges andUniversities Classroom Environment Inventory (CUCEI) is submitted to ten Englishteachers and also 277 second and third level students at YADIM. To support the datacollected from the questionnaires, ten classroom environments have been observedusing a checklist adapted from the questionnaire. The teachers and the studentsobserved are those who were given the questionnaire (CUCEI) before. The data havebeen analyzed by means of t-test and ANOVA values calculated on the SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).Key words: Classroom learning environment, Student perception, Teacher perception,Higher level, Colleges and Universities Classroom Environment Inventory (CUCEI)
