The effect of apo E polymorphism on blood lipid parameters in Çukurova Region

ABSTRACT The Effect of Apo E Polymorphism on Blood Lipid Parameters in Çukurova Region Apolipoprotein E plays a central role in lipoprotein metabolism. It serves as a ligand for the binding of triglyceride rich lipoprotein remnants to the LOL and the hepatic remnant receptors. Apo E gene is polymorphic, that codes for three apo E isoforms. The isoforms differ by amino acid substitutions at one or both 112. and 158. position. The genetic variation in apo E have significant impact on interindividual-variation of lipoprotein levels in normal subjects. Samples were obtained from a village of Adana and the people who administered to Biochemistry Department to search their lipid profiles. Apo E genotypes according to the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method and lipid parameters of 75 blood samples were analyzed. High levels of total-LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and lipoprotein (a), and low levels of HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein Al, were encountered as risk factors of atherosclerosis in male population. The frequency of apo E genotypes of the population were found as 2/2 %0, 2/3 %10.7, 2/4 %2.7, 3/3 %68.0, 3/4 %17.3 and 4/4 %1.3. The frequency of apo E genotypes were different between the village and city populations. Impact of apo E genotypes on lipid parameters of 2/2, 3/3 and 3/4 groups were analyzed statistically. It is observed that only the HDL cholesterol levels were affected by apo E polymorphism. Key Words: apolipoprotein E, lipid parameters, atherosclerosis, RFLP, frequency of apo E genotype VII
