Prof. Dr. Abdulhabip ÖZELProf. Dr. Halis ARIOĞLUProf. Dr. Atilla GÜRThis study was conducted to determine root yield and saponin content of someGypsophila species at Çukurova conditions in 2002- 2003 and 2003- 2004. G. pallida(Department of Field Crops, Agricultural Faculty, University of Ankara), G. paniculata(commercial cultivar), G. bicolor (Van- Özalp, Yenitulgalı village) and different three ecotipof G. arrosti var. nebulosa (Isparta regions) were adapted but G. bitlisensis (Bitlis- AlacabükMountain), G. pilosa (Urfa- Birecik) and G. ruscifolia (Van- Başkale- Köprüağzı village)species were not able to reproduced in the Çukurova conditions. In These species, plant hight 123.50- 5.03 cm, number of branch 12.97- 3.9 per plant, grain weight 2.519- 0.537 g, seed yield 80.08- 39.25 kg/da, root lenght 44.53- 27.27 cm, rootdiameter 4.42- 0.65 cm and protein rate 9.31- 7.03 % were varied. The highest dry root yieldof one year old plant 472.15 and two years old plant 837.87 kg/da were obtained from G.pallida. The lowest dry root yield 14.00- 143.59 kg/da in the first and second years oldrespectively were obtained from G. bicolor. The highest saponin content was obtained fromG. bicolor (16.79 % and 18.02 %, first and second age respectively), and the lowest ones wasdetermined in G. paniculata (8.89 % and 9.02 %, respectively) species. In regard to saponinyield, G. pallida was suggested for that region because it had maximum value for saponinyield.Key Words: Gypsophila, Soapwort, Saponin Content, Domestication
