Architectural competitions in the peripheral cities in therepublican period: The case of Antalya between 1950-2020

Competition is the sum of the efforts of individuals to show that they are superior to their competitors while achieving a set goal. Competitions generally create a competitive environment and the good one is aimed to win. With competition, advantages and disadvantages arise. While the increase in quality as a result of competition and the emergence of many alternative products or solutions while looking for the best can be shown as the advantages of the competition, the cost and time loss caused by more than one person working for a goal can be counted as the disadvantages of the competitions. While architectural competitions make an important contribution to the professional development of the competing architects, on the other hand, they provide significant gains and contributions to the process of obtaining qualified projects in architectural culture by enabling the production of new and up-to-date architectures. Competitions are an important mechanism for the generation of alternative ideas. Architectural project competitions, which prepare a free and transparent environment for the development of new ideas, researches, discourses, openings, within the field of architectural production, allow to produce of different options among project acquisition methods and lead to equality of opportunity among colleagues. For this reason, architectural project competitions in the world and in Turkey have functioned as a method of obtaining a project by managers and as a method of getting a job by architects. Architectural competitions are also a method of project production that has the power to visibly shape the urban built environment. The opening of architectural competitions, mostly on large-scale and public issues, strengthens this effect. Within the scope of the study, 90% of the buildings built as a result of the competition in Antalya are public scale structures; In other words, it was determined that those who applied for the method of obtaining projects as a result of the competition in Antalya were mostly public institutions. Therefore, the construction of architectural designs obtained through competition adds value to the city and as a result, permanent works are seen. Within the scope of this study, architectural competitions were scanned chronologically in the process that has come down to the present day with the establishment of the Republic and a detailed table has been created. In this context, all competitions published between 1930-2004 and 2004-2020 in the archives of the Competitions Index, Architecture Journal and Arkitekt Magazine prepared by the Ankara Branch of the Chamber of Architects were scanned. In this process of nearly a century, it was seen that 30 architectural competitions were held in Antalya, an important tourism city of Turkey. Analyses were made on these 30 projects and evaluations were made about the architectural features of the buildings obtained through the competition in Antalya.
