Mughal tombs in Delhi

The Mughals which is founded in India and ruled this region for many years, have left numbers of arcitectural monuments behind them. Among these, Mughal tombs draws attention by their monumental structures, planning specialities, building materials, ornemantations and façade compositions. This dissertation that mainly based on field work and Mughal historical sources investigates the tombs built in Mughal?s periods in Delhi. This study includes an introduction, a catalog, a summary and evaluation sections. In the introduction, the foundation of Mughal State, its political history and Mughal?s architecture were briefly introduced. The first section of the study is catalog. While the catalog being carved out, the tombs were categorised typologically in terms of their structure, construction and the sheme of plans. The tombs which are dated to Mughal Periods in Delhi are examined with regard to their location, architectural and ornamental features, and of their inscriptions/epitaphs and dates.In this theses, tombs are studied and evaluated with respect to their places in Islamic and Turkish tomb architecture, their interaction with the other examples of Islamic tombs, similarities and differences between them. In addition, we have tried to define both the effects of local architectural traditions on these tombs, and the place and importance of the Delhi tombs in the development of Mughal?s architecture.
