Abstract (EN)

Dementia is a neurological disorder characterized by the progressive deterioration of cognitive functions, typically seen in older individuals. Although there are different subtypes of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia, the core features of dementia include impairments in memory, attention, language, and other cognitive functions. These cognitive impairments can make daily living activities more difficult, leading to a loss of independence and a decline in the overall quality of life. Another common health issue encountered in dementia patients is dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. Dysphagia is a condition that affects the ability to swallow and is commonly observed in dementia patients. Impairments in swallowing can hinder food and fluid intake, leading to serious health complications such as aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and dehydration. Dysphagia becomes more pronounced in the later stages of dementia and, if untreated, can severely impact the patient's quality of life. There are some studies in the literature examining the effects of cognitive impairments on dysphagia, but limited research has deeply explored the relationship between these two conditions. In particular, there is no clear understanding of how cognitive impairments in dementia patients affect dysphagia. It is believed that the impairments in swallowing function may not only be linked to the physical ability to swallow but also to cognitive functions. For example, cognitive impairments may make it harder for patients to maintain proper muscle coordination during swallowing, which could further exacerbate dysphagia. This study aims to investigate the relationship between cognitive impairment and dysphagia in dementia patients. Understanding this relationship is of great importance for both early diagnosis and the development of treatment approaches. One of the key assumptions of this research is the need for a multidisciplinary approach to support cognitive functions and improve swallowing abilities. A more detailed exploration of this relationship is required to develop more effective treatment and care strategies for dementia patients.
