A review on the relationship of experience-centered design approaches and interior design

The concept of experience, which was defined as a reality that the subject lived or gained in the past, has become a designed phenomenon today. Designers and theorists have developed studies that bring different approaches to experience design, realizing that experience is shaped in line with the behavior, needs, and expectations of the subject. Thus, a multidimensional design field, defined as "experience-centered design", has emerged. The concept of "user" has taken the place of the subject. In this study, which aims to reveal the relationship between experience-centered design approaches and interior design, the concept of experience is examined in terms of spatial components in interior design. User experience design, user interface design, interaction design, and service design disciplines, which are among the experience-centered design approaches, were included in the scope of the study in creating the theoretical infrastructure of the study. The dimensions of experience-centered design approaches have been revealed by examining the related disciplines in-depth with literature review and document review methods. From this point of view, spatial analyzes were carried out to evaluate the relationship between experience-centered design approaches and interior design, and to understand the application forms of these approaches at the spatial scale. Selected examples were analyzed concerning the parameters of spatial cognition, physical properties, and environmental properties, which constitute the design process of the spatial user experience, including in the Spatial User Experience Model (SUE Model). The findings that emerged as a result of the analyzes were interpreted in the context of experience-centered design approaches and the interior design process and presented to the reader.
