Abstract (EN)
Traumatic and ischemic injuries of spinal cord are active at malfunctionıng of damaged tissue at primary and secondary mechanisms. Monoammins, free radicales, neuropeptits, arachidonic acids metobolites, and extracellular Ca variations are important at development of early ischemic and main causes of the secondary damage at progrediens tissue ischemic.Delay of the ischemic is the main treatment. Alpha-Lipoic acid at diabetic neuropaty, is well known agent at neuroprotective. The effects of alpha-liphoic acids are not studied on spinal cord injuries. In this study, our pıurpose was to present the effects of Alpha-Lipoıc acid on neuroprotective, especially with comparison of Methyl- Prednizolone.METHODS: 50 Sprague Dawley rat were divided in 5 groups (n=10) to create spinal cord trauma with Tator method. Group1:Only laminectomygroup. Group II: Laminectmy + spinal cord injury(SCI) group. Group III: Laminectomy + SCI + alpha lipoic acids (ALA)(100mg/kg), Group IV: Laminectomy + SCI + Methyl-Prednisolone (30 mg/kg). GroupV: Laminectomy + SCI + ALA + Methyl-Prednisolone group. 24 hours after applications, blood were drawn from all of the rats under Ketamine anesteshia and histopathological and biochemical materials were taken at injured spinal cord immediately.RESULTS: Rats with injured spinal cord were plegia. There were not any difference among the groups in motor functions. Comparision of the anti-oxidant values among the groups show the results of a significant statistical diffeneces between Group I and the groups with ALA (p<0.005). The diffence between the Groups with ALA and Groups with methyl-prednisolone was the oxygen radicals were significantly low. The most significant differnce was between the group with monoteraphy and the group, gave the combine treatment (p<0.005). At histopathologic examination, group which gave combine treatment, showed more vasodilatation. Our results reveal that the effects of Alpha-Lipoic acids on rats with spinal cord trauma lower the anti-oxidants formation.Key words: Spinal cord injury, Alpha- Lipoic, Methyl-Prednisonal, Oxygen radicals.
