Özet (EN)
In the second half of the 20th century, especially after the 1980s, the business world faced important developments like technological advancements, changing customer expectations, removal of trade barriers, and through so many political, social, and economic transformations and interactions between those patterns. Such developments in the global business environment and international trade shape the maritime business. One of the important understandings of dealing with these changes and advancements is to developt organizational resilience and ensuring its continuity. Although different cultural and industrial dynamics are important to identify and develop resilience capabilities; contextdependent approach creates variety in an organizational field which induces a lack of consensus on evaluation and development of organizational resilience factors/enablers/features. To fill this gap and to understand global developments and sui generis situations of maritime business, this dissertation offers Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) Approach as a theoretical lens. Traditional ways of managing organizations were not able to answer the requirements of all this cycle of interaction and change since maritime business organizations compete fiercely in dynamic markets in highly volatile business environments. And managing maritime businesses not only as a system but as a complex adaptive system will allow organizations to easily handle many problems and enables to develop resilient maritime organizations. This thesis aims to suggest an organizational framework to show how maritime business organizations can develop resilient organizations via Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) Approach if appropriate design features of Complex Adaptive Systems could be defined and included in organizational properties. The sample of the dissertation has decided as Bulk Shipowner Organizations due to the importance of bulk carriers in global maritime transportation and the Turkish fleet. To reach the mentioned aim, a systematic literature review conducted to figure out features/enablers/characteristics of Complex Adaptive Systems. After revealing the most used features of Complex Adaptive Systems, Maritime Expert opinions gathered to evaluate which features of CAS could help to develop organizational resilience in maritime business via two-round Delphi research. And as the last step, Interpretive Structural Modelling applied with the help of the same maritime experts' opinions to analyse and evaluate effective features that trigger other features while developing organizational resilience in the maritime business. The results of the study show that Complex Adaptive Systems is a proper lens to develop organizational resilience in the maritime business. Using proper Complex Adaptive Systems features while designing organizations help to enable resilient maritime business organizations. Among the 15 CAS features determined from the literature, Diversity Feature, Emergence Feature, Co-evolution Feature, Interaction Feature, Non-linearity Feature, Dynamism Feature and Unpredictability Feature are the most effective features that dominate the rest of the features while developing organizational resilience in the maritime business.
