Evaluation of using electronic bill of lading in maritimetransportation and an application

In the maritime transport, which is the main contractor of world trade, bill of lading is one of the most important documents. However, when it comes to situations such as the inability of the bill of lading to arrive at the evacuation port on time, theft or loss, the maritime trade may pose important problems in terms of stability. At the same time, delays in transmission of the bill of lading between the loader and the buyer can also result in demurrage costs. In this study, a research was carried out on the applicability of electronic bill of lading in maritime transportation. Developments in information technologies enable the transfer of bill of lading to the electronic environment via paper. In this way, it is aimed to reduce the documentation costs with e-bill of lading and to increase the speed and quality of the document. Besides avoiding differences in the documentation of maritime transport in the same environment bringing together stakeholders and will be the expansion of trade volume. On the other hand, cyber attacks that may occur against the electronic system and spyware and e-password capture reduce the trust of the parties to the system. With the application, it has been revealed that the speed and quality of the document can be increased by saving time in the use of the bill of lading in the electronic environment, as well as significant savings in costs. The results obtained from the study are closely related to many parties such as freight interested, carrier, brokers and agents.
