Abstract (EN)
In the realm of structural design globally, diverse design methodologies are employed. Particularly in regions prone to seismic activity, these designs are extensively implemented to ensure buildings are earthquake-resistant, in accordance with each nation's seismic codes. Although these regulations vary from country to country, their fundamental aim is consistent. In this field, technological advancements and innovations have led to the continuous evolution of structural design approaches. Recently, seismic isolation has emerged as a relatively new alternative to traditional design methods, offering enhanced resistance to earthquakes. Seismic isolation (Isolators) curtails the transmission of earthquake energy to structures by altering the dynamic characteristics of both the structure and the ground. This technological approach is of vital importance, especially for high-rise buildings, hospitals, bridges, and other critical structures. In areas with high seismic risk, particularly in countries like Turkey, seismic isolators play a critical role in improving the earthquake resilience of structures. The 1999 Marmara earthquake was a turning point for Turkey. The lessons from this disaster and the experiences from the 2023 earthquake have once again underscored the importance of seismic isolation. Specifically, the 1999 Marmara earthquake starkly revealed the country's unpreparedness for such events, resulting in thousands of deaths. This incident led to increased awareness and interest in building earthquake resilience. Consequently, in the field of structural engineering, interest in earthquake-resistant design methods like seismic isolators has significantly increased. Following the major earthquakes in February 2023 in Turkey, the benefits provided by seismic isolators to structures were clearly observed, underscoring the value of this technology. Unlike the devastation of the 1999 earthquake, buildings reinforced with seismic isolators in 2023 showed considerably better resilience, with many avoiding serious damage or destruction. On the other hand, considering user preferences in the luxury housing sector, it has become evident that structures reinforced with seismic isolators have gained increasing attraction among potential buyers and renters. Additionally, as a result of the rise in safety awareness, there has been an increase in the tendency of people to prefer living in earthquake-resistant dwellings. This trend has become a critical issue for both structural engineers and the general public.
