SUMMARY THE EFFECT OF EPIDERMAL GROWTH FACTOR AND SIALOADENECTOMY ON DEVELOPMENT OF SKİN İN RAT LİTTERS In the present study, the effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on skin development was investigated. In the study 36 adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The rats were divided into 3 equal groups; control group, sialoadenectomy group(SX) and sialoadenectomy + Epidermal growth factor group (SX +EGF). Submaxillary glands were removed at two experimental groups expect control group. The rats were mated after the recovery period of 21 days. However on the days 16,17,18 and 19th of the pregnancy, EGF was given with the dosage of 12.5 |ig daily to each animal with orogastric tube. th The rat litters following pregnancy were kept to grow up until the 28 day. On the 28th day, the rat litters of all groups were sacrified before their body weights had been taken. The samples of skin that been taken from the interscapular area were proceeded for examination under light and electron microscopy. İstatistically, these datas were evaluated with one way variance analysis (ANOVA) and multiple comparision test (TUKEY). In the samples of SX group skin; atrophic epidermis, hyperkeratosis, decreased at hair follicules and sebaceous glands were observed. İn addition, it was seen that the basal membran partially became thin, the missing of hemidesmosome and necrotic cells. At the samples of the skin of SX + EGF group the view was near the control group. EGF has an important role in the development of rat skin.
