Abstract (EN)

İntroduction and Aim: Age estimation in forensic medicine practise has significant role to determine situation such as criminal liability, civil competency, victims of sexual abuse, identification of persons without birth registration, be taken to military service, admission to official duty, taking the driver license and for retirement. Materials and Methods: İn this study, 393 prepared reports for living cases submitted to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Department of forensic medicine for the 5 - year period between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017 with the request of age determination by the judicial authorities were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The distribution of the cases by gender was 205 (52%) female, 188 (48%) male. Maximum cases were sent by legal courts with 338 (83.0%). When evaluated the reasons for being asked for bone age, it was seen that the reason for real age learning was included in 87 (22.1%) cases. The other reasons was marriage in 77 (19.6%) cases and official procedures in 67 (17.0%) cases respectively. It was found that the highest number of males were sent to learn the real age with 41 (21.8%) cases and the highest number of females were sent to for marriage procedures with 67 cases (32.7%). Conclution: The genetic structure of each society, environmental conditions, lifestyles are different from each other and the tissues used in age determination are affected by these parameters and developmental stages differ between societies, so it is necessary to develop standards for our own society with a comprehensive study.
