Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to objectively evaluate what is done within the context of the activities of the Turkish Language Reform between 1932 and 1983, the followed ways and in what extend they were achieved on the basis of Haugen (1983)'s language planning model. In the first section, purposes, models and types of language planning are given after handling the term "language planning" throughly. The second section of the study is dedicated to the examples and implementations of language planning in other nations such as France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, and Israel. In the third section, the movements in Turkish language throughout the history (from VI. Century until Rebuplic period) are mentioned. In the fourth section, the Turkish language reform is examined under the headings of "selection, codification, implementation and elaboration" of the language planning model of Haugen (1983). In the conclusion section, the studies carried out within the context of the language reform between 1932 and 1983 are summarized in the light of the given model, the results are evaluated and prospective proposals are made.
