Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study is to provide the availability of psychometric properties in Turkish society by analyzing the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire for Oral Health in patients with dental caries. Method: A total of 450 individuals, including 248 women and 202 men, who applied to the Department of Restorative Dental Treatment of the Faculty of Dentistry of RTEU, participated in our study. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire including socio-demographic and clinical characteristics and the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire for Oral Health . During the subsequent examination, detailed intra-oral examinations of each individual were performed under reflector light using an oral mirror and a round-tip probe, and the tooth surfaces were evaluated. The criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) were used for the diagnosis of caries. The number of caries (D), tooth extracted due to caries (M) and filled (F) teeth in the mouth of the patients were summed up and the caries status was evaluated by looking at the DMFT values. Statistical analysis of the data was made in IBM SPSS 25 program. The reliability and validity of the scale were calculated by performing explanatory and confirmatory factor analyzes. Result: As a result of the explanatory factor analysis, 6 items were removed from the scale and 7 factors with 30 items were revealed. These factors explained 59.5% of the total variance. The internal consistency coefficients for each factor ranged from 0.58 to 0.86. Considering the goodness of fit indices of the scale; RMSEA 0.060; NFI 0.900; CFI 0.901; It was found to be at an acceptable level with χ2 969.855 (p=0.001) values. Conslusion: The Revised Illness Perception Scale for Oral Health questionnaire was found to be valid and reliable for the Turkish population. It was concluded that it is suitable for patients with dental caries to evaluate their perceptions about the disease, expectations from treatment and psychometric properties.
