Dawn in divan poetry

The time of Dawn, which encompasses the end of the night and the beginning of Fajr, is a significant period. Divan poets have used dawn both as a temporal element and as a metaphor in their works. In Islamic tradition, dawn holds great importance, which is why poets made efforts to stay awake, pray, and spend this time in devotion. For the lover who is exhausted by the passion of love and dreams of meeting the beloved, dawn is a time that cannot be wasted. Another reason dawn is important in Divan poetry is the close relationship it has with nature. Dawn is a time when nature is awakening. In this study, examples from 21 Divan works are presented to show how the time of dawn is addressed by poets, what metaphors are used, and what natural phenomena occur during dawn. As a result, it has been determined that dawn is mainly portrayed in poetry due to its religious significance and, subsequently, its role as the beginning of the day.
