Cypress in divan poem (15th and 16th centuries)

In order to understand Divan poem, we have to know the world of imagery and simile which the Divan poets get help from, while preparing the Divan poems; also we have to know the patterns which makes up this world. In the world of simile and imagination in Divan poem which we are talking about; nature is very important. The nature takes place with all of its factors in this poem. Especially the similes of flowers, trees, animals and similar functions create the main of Divan poem. Also cypress took place as a part of nature in poems very often. Especially at the times of starting and developing of Divan poem, in 15th and 16th centuries with the change of Ottoman garden culture; the plants became more important in the poems. With this process cypress also adorned the imagination garden of Divan poem. In our study; we tried to show how and with which characteristics cypress was used in Divan poem by help of sample couplets; which Divan poets used very often as a simile's element in Divan poems. In our searching which is based on texts, we tried to bring out the characteristics of cypress in Divan poem, and the relationship of cypress with other elements of nature; by searching 20 divans picked out from 15th and 16th centuries. We gave ideas about the place of cypress in Divan poem, its characteristics, the types of cypresses and similes about cypresses, the place of cypress in nature and as a part of nature other plants and animals used in same couplets. At the end of our study; we examined how often cypresses was used in Divan poem of 15th and 16th centuries; and which characteristics were important by using samples. And also we added qasida and ghazel writings which their repeated word was cypress to the end of our study. As a result; in our thesis study 'Cypress In Divan Poem (15th and 16th Centuries)', we tried to show the place of cypress in Divan poem, its importance and inspires of its similes with using samples of Divan texts.
