Evaluation of Violent and Nonviolent Criminal Behaviors of Individuals Diagnosed with Diabetes

The aim of the study am to examine the distribution of violent and non-violent criminal behaviors according to sociodemographic characteristics of patients receiving treatment for diabetes. The study was conducted with 337 patients who were older than 18 years of age, who came to endocrine outpatient clinics and were hospitalized for treatment in internal medicine and endocrine clinics. In the collection of data in this research; The 'Sociodemographic and Clinical Data Collection Form', which contains information regordine to sociodemgraphic characteristics and diseases of individuals, and the 'Violent and Non-Violent Criminal Behaviors Scale' were used to determine their tendency to violence. The data were collected from the individuals by face-to-face self-report method on the appropriate days of the week in a way that would not disrupt their treatment. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in Adana City Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine and Endocrine Clinics on inpatients and on outpatients in Endocrine Polyclinics between May 2021 and August 2021. The required sample size for a population of 6646 people was found to be 337. Statistical analyzes of the data of our study were performed using a package program called SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics 26). Whether the continuous variables were normally distributed in the group was checked with skewness-kurtosis values and Kolmogorov Smirnov test. When comparing two independent groups, the Mann Whitney U test was used when the normal distribution was not observed. When comparing more than two independent groups, the Kruskal-Wallis H test was used for cases where continuous variables did not show normal distribution. Statistical significance level was accepted as 0.05 in all applied tests. In the findings of the study, in the analysis of violent and non-violent criminal behaviors of individuals diagnosed with diabetes according to sociodemographic variables, it was determined that the patients hospitalized in the clinic had higher levels of violent behavior compared to the patients who applied to the polyclinic. The general violence behaviors of the single diabetic patients participating in the study were found to be higher than the married diabetic patients. It has been determined that the violent behaviors of diabetic patients who use cigarettes and alcohol are high. Considering the findings of our study, significant differences were found in some areas. One of them is that people with diabetes tend to use violence in close relationships and general violence.
