Abstract (EN)
This study aims to safeguard, assess, and enhance the geological and geomorphological formations of Diyarbakır and its surrounding areas. Diyarbakır is among Turkey's most affluent districts in terms of geological heritage, featuring multiple notable sites, including the Karacadağ Volcanic Complex, the Eğil Limestone Hills, the Birkleyn Caves, and the Göderne Waterfall. These regions possess significant potential for scientific inquiry, education, and tourism. The study examined the main geological structures in Diyarbakır, comparing their characteristics and conservation requirements with international standards. The conservation of geomorphological formations is crucial for the sustainability of natural heritage and for generating economic opportunities for local communities. Promoting tourism activities should be integrated into sustainable development policies in areas such as Diyarbakır, renowned for its geological diversity. Locations such as Seyhandede Waterfall, Ovabağ Volcanics, Hasuni Caves, Bırkleyn Caves, Ashabı-Keyf Caves, and Çermik Gelincik Mountain present considerable scientific research and tourism opportunities. This study evaluated the geosites in Diyarbakır according to Brilha's criteria, encompassing scientific, educational, touristic, and conservation values. The quantitative study has offered direction for sustainable management and prioritization of these regions. This study highlights the importance of promoting and preserving Diyarbakır's geological and geomorphological features on both national and international levels. Conserving these geological characteristics and incorporating them into tourism would enhance the region's significance for scientific inquiry and education, while also promoting the economic development of local communities.
