Example of bathing and cleaning in the eastern mediterranean port cities: Phaselis Small Bath and latrine

The water which is source of life and the path of human beings had encountered sometimes in good and bad conditions. Both conditions produced material or spiritual solutions, somehow, this unity continues and water is used for both quench thirst and cleaning. When the built-in life was required, closed areas were also needed for toilet and bathing needs, and the process of emergence of baths and Latrines started. This study aims to analyse and interpret the roots of cleaning, baths and latrines together with examples from the Eastern Mediterranean Port cities by taking Phaselis Hamam and Latrines to the center. In doing so, first of all, the place of water as a physical and ritual in the life of human beings, how the importance given to water is continued in the buildings constructed for it and the association of water with cleaning will be examined. Due to the fact that human life is indispensable, the path of cleaning from antiquity to today will be discussed spatially, how and where the first bath and toilet structures emerged will be explained. In this study, the phases of the baths and toilet structures until the Roman period will be sampled, When it comes to the Roman period, it will be revealed that the Roman Baths and Latrinas come together in social life with the ties and innovations of the past. Finally, the location and architectural features of the Phaselis Small Baths and Latrinas in Phaselis city will be examined and the prepared relays and restoration proposals will be presented. As a result of the studies, it is aimed to compare the situation of Phaselis Small Baths and Latrinas in the current situation and the times when it is used.
