Relationship between 9th grade students' learning styles, academic achievement and motivation in English class

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the learning styles of ninth grade students and their motivation for English class and their academic achievement in English class. Method: In this study, relational survey method was used to examine the relationship between ninth grade students' learning styles and their motivation and academic achievement in English class. While creating the sample of the study, easy sampling method was used for ease of access. Grasha Reichman learning styles questionnaire, an English academic achievement test created from the achievement tests in EBA (Education Information Network) and a motivation scale for English course were applied to the sample group in the study, and the data were analyzed using frequency,percentage, chi-square test and spearman rho in the SPSS program and the relationship between the variables was examined. Results: As a result of the normality test, it was determined that the data obtained with the measurement tools did not show normal distribution. It was observed that the students in the sample group had the most independent learning style with 21.1% and the least competitive learning style with 9.6%. Students' motivation for English course was found to be moderate. According to school types, the highest motivation score average in English class belongs to science high school students. The relationship between learning styles and academic achievement is not statistically significant, but independent learners have higher achievement scores than students in other learning styles. Finally, it was determined that there was a moderate positive relationship be- tween students motivation scores and their academic success. Conclusion and Suggestions: As a result of the data obtained in the study, a moderate positive relationship was found between motivation for the course and academic success. The study can be repeated with different working groups to determine the relationships of other variables.
