The effects of foreign policy crisis on Turkish-Russian relations: Example of fighter jet crisis

The most important event that face off Turkey and Russia within the scope of the Syrian Civil War is the plane crash that took place on November 24, 2015. A foreign policy crisis started between Turkey and Russia in consequence a Russian bomber aircraft violated Turkish airspace in Hatay Yayladağı region and continued the violation despite being warned many times and then was shot down by the Turkish Air Force. As a NATO member country shot down a Russian plane for the first time since the 1950s, this incident took place widely in the Turkish and world press and caused uneasiness. The crisis has deeply affected Turkish-Russian relations. It last about 8 months the crisis to be completely resolved. In order to overcome the crisis with the least damage, the parties have adopted different crisis management techniques according to their own position. In the study, the techniques used by the parties in managing the crisis were examined and the effects of the crisis on bilateral relations were evaluated. The study will be important in terms of addressing the events that led to the outbreak of the crisis and evaluating the Fighter Jet Crisis in terms of crisis management.
