Comparison of three and two dimensional cephalometric measurements from cone beam computed tomography images and measurements from conventional lateral cephalometric radiographs of patients with cleft lip and palate

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to compare 2 dimensional (2D) cephalometric measurements of cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients obtained from conventional lateral cephalograms and measurements made upon 2D and 3 dimensional (3D) images acquired from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Our study includes, 47 CLP patients who have both CBCT records and lateral cephalometric images taken from Dicle University Dentistry Faculty Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology archive. Distribution of individuals by gender is 28 male, 19 female; mean age 13,6. For obtaining 2D and 3D images from CBCT records Dolphin 3D (version 11.9, Dolphin İmaging, Chatsworth, California) software programme were used and all cephalometric measurements were made with Dolphin 3D. Measurement classification of the groups was done as follows; group I, convansionel lateral cephalometric radiographs; group II, 2D lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from CBCT; group III, 3D images from CBCT. All stastistical analysis made by SPSS software package (SPSS 17.0 Inch., Chigago, II., USA). All parameters demonstrated normal distribution as a result of Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, Repeated Measurements ANOVA used in attempt to evaluation of three groups for repeated measures. Bonferroni post hoc tests used for multiple comparisons. 24 individuals were chosen randomly to evaluate metod error and all measurements were repeated. The confidence interval was measured by the intraclass correlation coefficient. There were statistically significant difference between numerous of 21 angular, 18 lineer parameters of 2D and 3D measurements. In 2D cephalometric analysis all skeletal lineer parameters except Ar-Go, Go-Me, S-Go were higher than 3D cephalometric analysis, relatively. High compatibility found between measurements of convensional lateral cephalometric radiographs and 2D images obtained from CBCT records.
