Comparison of total oxidant and total antioxidant capacity in patients with low and high grade gliomas

In this study, we aimed to investigate the oxidative - antioxidative balance in both glial tumor tissue and plasma samples. In addition, differences between low and high grade gliomas were investigated from this point of view. The study has been performed totally in 56 individuals. 16 of them were low grade glioma, 20 of them were high grade glioma and 20 healthy individuals were planned as the control group. Blood samples were taken from tumor groups before the operation and tumor tissue samples were taken during the operation, only blood samples were taken from the control group. TAS (total antioxidant level), TOS (total oxidant levels) and OSI (oxidative stress index) were measured in tumor and plasma samples using Erel?s spectrophotometric method. The TAS and TOS levels in plasma samples of both groups were statistically lower when compared to healty individuals (p<0.05). But there was no significant difference in plasma OSI levels among the groups (p>0.05). In addition, there were no significant differences statistically in plasma TAS, TOS and OSI levels among the high and low grade glioma goups. In tumor samples, it is observed that TAS and TOS levels in patients with high grade gliomas were statistically higher than patients with low grade gliomas (p<0.05) however there weren?t meaningful differences in OSI levels between the groups (p>0.05). If the histopathological grade of the glial tumors increases, oxidative-antioxidative homeostasis in the tumor tissue shows more variability, but this reflection is not observed in the plasma. It is also observed that both oxidant and antioxidant substances were decreased in blood when compared to healthy individuals. In this type of pathologies, antioxidants is probably decreased because of their own consumption in order to reduce oxidants.Key words: Glial tumor, Oxidative stress, Total antioxidant status, Total oxidant status
