Evaluation of poverty culture and help-seeking behavior in terms of social work on the basis of sociology of emotion

Poverty makes life difficult with its negativities, and individuals seek solutions to their problems by reaching institutions and organizations that provide social assistance in these difficulties. The social assistance process leaves emotional, cultural and social traces on the individual. The aim of the research is to evaluate the emotional effects of poverty on the basis of the sociology of emotion, to evaluate how the culture of poverty continues and how the social help-seeking behavior is shaped in terms of social work. The research universe consists of individuals who applied to the Social Assistance and Solidarity Foundation of Kocaköy district of Diyarbakır province, and the sample consists of 388 applicants in the universe. The data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed with the relevant quantitative analysis program. In addition to the frequency analysis, the relations of the data according to the groups were evaluated with Pearson Chi-Square and Fisher's Chi-Square analysis. As a result of the research, it was seen that the social assistance application and outcome stages have emotional effects on individuals, and gender may be effective in the positive outcome of the application. It has been determined that the young people are less affected by the aid process and its emotional consequences than the older individuals, and the social aid application develops in the circle of poverty culture. It has been evaluated that social work intervention is necessary for the solution of social problems that arise during the social assistance process. It is thought that social assistance applicants need social gains besides financial gains, and social workers should take a more active role in order to strengthen the awareness of fulfilling their active social responsibilities.
