Dyslexic readability analysis of texts and diagnosis of dyslexia using eye movements

Although people with literacy training can easily and spontaneously read a piece of text, reading is a very complex activity. While letters and words are perceived by the visual system in the brain, cognitive faculties such as memory, language, reasoning, and such are also involved in reading activity. Literacy in the modern world is of utmost importance for managing one's daily life and contributing to the society as an educated person, as well as for individual and professional development. However, dyslexia, which is thought to affect around 10-15% of society, causes reading deficit for some, despite their normal intelligence. Albert Einstein, Picasso, Bill Gates, and Steven Spielberg are known to have suffered from dyslexia. This thesis has made the readability of its texts measurable for a dyslexic reader with improved a novel readability index which named Gunduz Index. At the same time, the success of this index was measured as a result of the reading experiments. By analysing the eye movements recorded during the reading experiments, it was estimated that the reader was a dyslexic or non-dyslexic reader with a success rate of up to 90%. Another important point of the thesis is that this successful diagnosis on primary school students can be done before school. For this purpose, a game that testes the ability to establish the connection between geometric shapes and sounds has been created and the results are analysed. As a result, with the success rate of 70%, the person who played the game can be predicted to be dyslexic.
